Journal: Qualities & Characteristics of The Doshas

In Ayurveda, the three doshas – Vata, Pitta, and Kapha – represent fundamental energies that govern all physical and mental processes. Each dosha has unique qualities and characteristics, influencing everything from body type and digestion to emotions and behaviour.

 

Vata:

  • Elements: Air and Ether (Space)
  • Qualities: Light, cold, dry, rough, subtle, mobile, clear
  • Key Functions: Movement, circulation, nervous system, creativity, communication
  • Physical Characteristics: Thin frame, dry skin and hair, cold hands and feet, irregular appetite and digestion
  • Mental/Emotional Characteristics: Active, creative, enthusiastic, restless, anxious, forgetful

 

Pitta:

  • Elements: Fire and Water
  • Qualities: Hot, sharp, oily, liquid, spreading
  • Key Functions: Metabolism, digestion, body temperature, intelligence, courage
  • Physical Characteristics: Medium build, warm skin, sharp features, strong appetite and digestion, prone to inflammation
  • Mental/Emotional Characteristics: Intelligent, ambitious, focused, assertive, irritable, competitive

 

Kapha:

  • Elements: Earth and Water
  • Qualities: Heavy, slow, cool, oily, smooth, stable
  • Key Functions: Structure, lubrication, stability, growth, immunity
  • Physical Characteristics: Solid frame, oily skin, strong hair and nails, slow metabolism, good stamina
  • Mental/Emotional Characteristics: Calm, patient, loving, compassionate, attached, prone to lethargy
